If you want a desktop you're better building it yourself though.

I've built my last few - not as scary as it sounds.
good site for explaining what to do

Maybe - I think you'd struggle to get the same spec for the same money without having to order all your bits from different places

Yes, but do you really know what the spec of the pre built machine is? Do they list the exact parts? Do they list the full capabilities of the motherboard, what the max FSB speed is; do they give the CAS ratings for the memory? Do they tell you what the PSU rating is, and how stable the voltage on each rail is? Do they tell you who manufactures each part, because even things like the quality of the PCB itself has an effect.

When you build a machine you actually know what you're putting in.

Fair point - but once you get beyond the headline stats of components then most people wouldn't know what the difference is anyway. I have built every PC i've had since I was 16 for the record... but unless I was spending a lot of money and getting some nice custom cooling kit etc. then i'd probably just buy off the shelf.

Anyone know any good free file recovery programs? I've been using DiskDigger, but I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other ones?

I've only used PCInspector in the past, and not having ever used disk digger, I couldn't tell you which is better.

Maybe you could let me know if you find out? ;)

Maybe, although I may never find out. My laptop's denying all knowledge of it's hard disk, which now sounds like a power drill after a sudden blue screen the other day while it was running checkdisk. My last hope is that something else can read the drive and pull off whatever's on it. Not had time to try it yet, but i'm not too confident :(
